Team Description

WE MADE IT!!

Thank you very much for visiting our JustGiving page.

Ollie Atkins, Max Benson and Henry Tregear (three students from Radley College) achieved their challenge and have cycled 1017 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats between Wednesdat 13th and Monday 25th August (12.5 days versus the planned 14 days). We are raising money for the British Skin Foundation in order to help take down skin cancers that have affected the group. Ollie's grandfather died in 2012 from melanoma cancer and Max's Uncle has suffered from squamous cell carcinoma. Relatively little is known about these skin cancers but there are about 100,000 new cases per year, with seven people dying each day. Currently, there is no known cure for the disease but we are hopeful that with your help, this will not be the case for long.

We will be hugely grateful for whatever you are able to contribute.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the British Skin Foundation. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

We would like to thank www.unbeatablehire.com for making available the motor home support vehicle at reduced rates

Many thanks also to BANJO CYCLES NEWBURY - www.banjocycles.com/ for kindly lending us a ‘back up’ support bicycle in case of emergencies

WE MADE IT!!

The three of us arrived in John O'Groats at midday on Monday 25th August in beautiful weather and were very relieved to have finished. We did the trip in 12.5 days vs our target of 14 days - averaging over 80 miles a day!

Now for the long drive back...

Day 12: penultimate day?

Leaving Evanton for long ride across the remote Highlands hopefully to reach north coast and Bettyhill for supper. Lack of wifi and signal means we have not updated for a while but will try to fill in missing days later. All well .. Now and happy end in sight. Saw signs yesterday to John O'Groats 109 miles but only by following A9!

DAY 7 - Slaidburn - Talkin (82 miles)

We started the day with a delicious cooked breakfast in 'The Hark to Bounty' in Slaidburn and we were off to a pretty good start. Despite a small navigation problem around Ingleton, we got to lunch in pretty good time. However, it was clear that the previous six days of cycling had started to show as both Henry and Max's knees were in a lot of pain and, despite some painkillers from James, Henry was clearly struggling on both knees. We pushed on through the afternoon to make it (just about) to a village called Talkin, not too far from the Scottish border. We stayed at another pub (is it me or does James not really like the idea of a campsite?!) which cooked us a delicious supper before a brilliant night's sleep.

DAY 6 - Middlewich - Slaidburn (82 miles)

Marcus' last morning as our support vehicle driver had come and we said our goodbyes to him in a lidl car park in Middlewich... Emotional stuff. Now it was the turn of James Tregear to act as support driver - met up at lunch.

DAY 5 - Leominster - Middlewich (103 miles)

Today started very well. In fact, it continued to go very well and even ended well which was unusual. The day started with a delicious breakfast, cooked by Max's Uncle Mark. We made incredible progress, cycling just over 60 miles in our morning session and had extra time for a long lunch. It was clear the the roads had gotten a lot better since Hereford and we could really feel the difference as we were averaging about 16 miles per hour (not including stops). We were going at such a pace that we decided to extend our original destination to a further 15 miles. We are now 45 miles ahead of our original schedule (as we have been adding 5 miles to our original daily targets)

Posted on 18/08/2014 @ 18:41 by Max Benson

DAY 4 - Pucklechurch - Leominster (75 miles)

After about 10 miles of pretty easy cycling, the trio reached the famous Severn Bridge. However, the embarking didn't go too smoothly as we hadn't realised that we were cycling on the motorway until we got to the toll gate where a light hearted chap saw the funny side and showed us where to find the cycle lane. But the danger didn't end there; Henry, full of excitement at the prospect of cycling on a bridge, clipped the back of Ollie's bike, causing Henry to veer right into the railing on the side, giving us all a scare that he would go right over and into the Severn. We got into Wales (apparently unharmed) but there was a sense of frustration as we were all getting annoyed by the Welsh signs which were displayed in both Welsh and English, causing us to get easily confused when several towns were actually called different names in Welsh to English. Thankfully, we didn't have to stay very long and we soon made it through the Wye Valley and Herefordshire. Anyone who lives in Herefordshire will know how appalling the roads are, and they feel so much worse when cycling at speed. Finally we made it to our destination at Max's Aunt and Uncle's house. After a nice hot shower, we were spoiled with the offer of some cider and a session in their hot tub which, combined with its fancy massage system, made us feel so much better.

DAY 3 - Winsford - Pucklechurch (83 miles)

With the two worst days (or so we have been told) out of the way, the lads set out on a particularly cold morning in Winsford, Somerset. With a positive mindset, we demolished the ride up the Quantock hills and had a very easy ride downwards followed by the flattest hills we had seen on the tour. We were greeted at lunch time by Max's mum, sister and Godmother where we all had a great meal together.
Having not booked a campsite, (as we were going at a quicker pace) Marcus started running out of options for the night. However, after making various phone calls, he managed to find a liittle farmhouse B&B fairly close by where we had the best night's sleep yet.

Posted on 18/08/2014 @ 18:39 by Max Benson

DAY 2 - Delabole - Winsford (82 miles)

After the hellish 90 miles of day 1, the three of us were feeling a bit uneasy knowing that there were still a lot of Cornish hills to climb and we had heard that Devon wasn't much kinder. After about 10 miles of climbing followed by a steep descent, we were greeted at around sea level by a 30% gradient hill. Tough. Our luck changed in our middle section and, as soon as we arrived in Devon, we started to feel like we were making progress.

Posted on 18/08/2014 @ 18:37 by Max Benson

DAY 1 - Land's End - Delabole (82 miles + 8 unplanned miles!!)

What an exhausting day... We woke up at 6:00 to prepare for the opening ride to begin at 7:00 but we got a bit carried away with the 'signpost ceremony' and Henry managed to completely deflate his inner tube: great start. We finally began cycling at around 7:45 and the first section of 30 miles went very well (apart from the fact that we took an accidental detour of about 8 miles). We were very pleased to be welcomed by Marcus with some cornish pastys which we devoured as we realised that a meagre portion of coco pops would not be enough to fuel our energy-craving bodies. In good spirits, we set off for the next section of 25 miles. By now, we were starting to feel sore in many places and the hills just seemed to keep coming. Finally, and a little behind schedule, we found Marcus and we stopped for lunch briefly. After a quick calculation, we discovered that we still had over 30 miles to cover before we could call it a day and it was clear that our moral was down. Still, we set off again, going at a fairly slow pace as the climbs kept on testing our legs and the downhill sections seemed far too short and infrequent. A good few hours (and many hills) later, Max caught sight of a familiar campervan and the three of us picked up our momentum and raced towards the final destination. Roll on day 2...

TRAVELLING DOWN TO LANDSEND

Firstly, apologies that we have only just published news on our epic voyage! Modern telecoms does not seem to have found its way to the South-West of England and the word 'internet' does not appear in the Cornish language. And so, while we have a veyr brief bit of signal in Chepstow, a quick update:

After a mammoth 7 hour drive (mostly due to Stonehedge and Cornish traffic) in the campervan (Henry has named it 'Kevin') the team finally arrived at the Cardinney campsite just a few miles from the start at Land's End. After a delicious curry precooked by Mrs B, the lads are ready to get some rest before the opening day of 77 miles. Talcum powder is at the ready...

Just one week until the epic challenge begins!

Accompanied by Max's dad, Ollie, Max and Henry will be driving down to Land's End next Tuesday 12th August ready to start their cycle ride from Land's End to John O'Groates on Wednesday 13th!
